  Abiomed is recruiting for a Principal Controls & Instrumentation Engineer, located in Danvers, MA Abiomed's Global Automation Engineering Group showcases innovative technical masters, world-class technologies and solutions that “power” the quality and performance of Abiomed’s heart pumps! The Principal Controls & Instrumentation Engineer provides engineering and technical resource expertise to improve the group’s contribution to company performance.
This role serves as one of the leaders of the technical community, working across all technical functions, both internally and externally, developing new technologies and processes for existing and future product production.
This role is responsible to design, build and implement the most efficient manufacturing controls hardware and software to meet the automation needs of a very dynamic and technically complicated business.

Key Responsibilities.
This role will primarily focus on the design, development, specification and implementation of automation controls and instrumentation for assembly and packaging processes.
In addition, continuous improvement efforts, technology transfers and new product development may be focus areas in support of business objectives.
Design and implement complex Machine Vision, Laser, and Measurement Systems to be used for quality control on assembly equipment.
Development, testing, and execution of PLC/SCADA application software for manufacturing processes, equipment, and systems.
Creates or coordinates the hardware and software design solutions for novel or complex problems; integrates regulatory and operational needs, and assesses cost benefit.
Qualifications Education.
Bachelor of Science or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering.
Master of Science or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering is a plus.
Required Experience and Skills.
In depth experience in designing, debugging, specifying, selecting, manufacturing acceptance, installation, startup, commissioning and validation of control systems for fully automated and advanced discrete component assembly.
Technical mastery in the field of engineering for automation controls systems, with breadth and depth of control and instrumentation design principles.
Development, design and hands-on technical capability of machine controls for newly built custom automation machines – exposure to industrial clean room manufacturing environments is helpful.
Development, prototyping, simulation, design and fixing of software and hardware controls including.
electrical schematics, panel layouts, facility inputs, networking, device communications, Programmable Logic Controllers (Allen Bradley preferred), Human Machine Interfaces, general purpose industrial computers, complex motion control, robotics programming, microprocessors, servo control, pneumatics, sensors and vision systems.
The proven track record to understand user requirements of complex types of products, translate these into conceptualized automated controls solutions for and island of automation.
Having done so in a regulated and/or medical device industry is beneficial.
Experience working with external partners and internal customers to overcome barriers.
Ability to critically review engineering designs and ensure adherence to company design and development guidelines and SOPs.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects is a plus.
Assisting in the successful creation and management of validation master plans for new controls or instrumentation technologies, and / or transferring technologies to new factory sites.
Candidate should be capable of responding to barriers, problems, and challenges with internal manufacturing or external equipment suppliers.
The candidate must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge and experience with post-implementation continuous improvement efforts and methodology is beneficial.
Depth in VFD and Servo Drives (AB & SEW) preferred Experience with machine vision is a strong plus (Keyence and Cognex preferred) Strong knowledge of PID loops and process control concepts Proven knowledge of servo motion control concepts and robotics (ABB preferred) SQL Server Database knowledge and Visual Basic Programming a plus Applied problem solving skills with a hands-on approach to identify root cause and define a solution.
Understanding and proven experience implementing machine and process safety considerations is critical.
Knowledge of CE, UL, SCCR & NFPA-70E&79 regulations is a plus  The successful candidate will be expected to travel.
Length of travel will depend on the initiative being implemented and phase of the project.
Anticipated travel is estimated at less than 10% of their time.
