du/en) is seeking a PhD candidate toresearch on light energy harvesting for powering autonomous sensors inside buildings in the framework of the European Project SUST(AI)N (Smart Building Sensitive Daily Sentiment).
Today's so-called 'smart' buildings use a wide range of sensors, actuators, and software programs to make them intelligent.
However, they still lack a sense of awareness.
The EIC-funded SUST(AI)N project will fix this by the unparalleled development of precision-sensing AI processing shared across devices (i.
.
distributed intelligence), and the flexibility and implementation efficiency of reconfigurable hardware.
The integration of these interconnected, self-monitoring systems will enable probabilistic reasoning and, ultimately, the achievement of awareness.
SUST(AI)N complies with directive /EU (European Parliament) that "new buildings have to be nearly zero energy" despite the required massive installation of sensors.
It supports the European Green Deal2 and the ‘do no significant harm’ principle.
Sustainability is reached via energy harvesting, energy-less distributed processing and encrypted communication, and RF-sensing.
The UPC PhD candidate will deal with the energy harvesting topic, in particular to power the sensor nodes through the light energy present within the buildings.
The main following tasks are planned:-Lab characterization of commercial photovoltaic (PV) cells.-Measurements of Indoor light across the building.-In situ characterization of PV cells and their energy output during extended periods of time.-Design and implementation of maximum power point trackers (MPPTs).-Design and implementation of complete prototypes to power autonomous sensors inside buildings.
